Why Material Choice Matters More in Mobile Than Inland Alabama
Mobile averages over 60 inches of rain per year -- more than Seattle. The humidity stays high most of the year, with the combination of heat and moisture creating conditions that accelerate wood rot, screen degradation, and fastener corrosion. Add in two love bug seasons, active mosquitoes from March through October, and occasional tropical storm wind loads, and you need materials that were chosen for the Gulf Coast climate, not just whatever the big box stores stock.
The material choices that work well in a screened porch in Huntsville or Birmingham may not be the right call in Mobile or Fairhope. Here's what we recommend and why.
Framing Materials
Pressure-Treated Pine
Pressure-treated lumber is the most common and most affordable framing material for screened porches in Alabama. Modern PT lumber treated to a retention level of 0.15 lbs per cubic foot (ground contact rating) holds up well in Mobile's humidity when properly detailed. Key considerations: it needs to be sealed or painted, ground contact between the wood and concrete should be avoided where possible, and fasteners must be rated for PT lumber (stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized).
Pressure-treated framing is a solid choice for most residential porches in Mobile. Budget-conscious projects can use PT pine effectively if they use the right fasteners and protect the wood properly.
Aluminum Framing
Aluminum framing costs 20 to 35 percent more than pressure-treated pine but is rot-proof, doesn't absorb moisture, and doesn't require painting or sealing. For pool enclosures and any structure that will be constantly exposed to water, pool chemicals, or salt air from Mobile Bay, aluminum is the better long-term choice.
Aluminum screen rooms are pre-engineered systems with consistent dimensions, which simplifies installation and reduces the chance of structural issues from field modifications. The tradeoff is less flexibility in custom sizes and shapes compared to site-built wood framing.
Cedar
Western red cedar is naturally rot-resistant and looks good unpainted or with a clear stain. It's available in Mobile but costs more than PT pine and requires occasional maintenance. We don't see it used frequently in our market, but it's a reasonable choice for homeowners who prioritize the appearance of exposed framing.
Composite Lumber
Composite framing materials (similar to composite decking but in structural profiles) exist but are not commonly used for screened porch framing in this market. They're more expensive, heavier, and offer limited advantages over aluminum in most applications.

For most Mobile homeowners, no-see-um 20x20 fiberglass mesh is the right call. It blocks the tiny insects that make the Gulf Coast uncomfortable for much of the year without a huge cost premium. The reduction in visible light is modest -- most people find it acceptable once they're actually using the porch.

Roofing Options for Screened Porches
Polycarbonate Panels
Translucent polycarbonate roofing is popular for porch covers and screen rooms. It lets in diffused light while blocking most rain. It's lighter than solid roofing, requires minimal framing, and is available in clear, tinted, or bronze finishes. In Mobile's heat, a tinted or twin-wall panel performs better than clear -- it reduces solar heat gain significantly.
Corrugated Metal
Standing-seam or corrugated metal roofing is durable, sheds water well, and holds up in wind events better than most alternatives. In Mobile, it's a practical choice for porches attached to a main house roof. It can be noisier in rain than solid panels but handles Gulf Coast storm conditions well.
Solid Shingle Roof
When a screened porch is fully attached to the house and tied into the existing roofline, matching shingle material is often the best aesthetic choice. This is common for larger custom porches that are designed to look like an integral part of the house rather than an addition. Shingle roofs require proper flashing where they meet the house to prevent water infiltration -- this is a common failure point in cheaper porch builds.
Screen Ceiling (No Solid Roof)
Some porch enclosures use screen on the ceiling as well as the walls, allowing full light but still blocking insects. This works fine in shaded locations but gets very hot in direct sun. It's also not appropriate for areas that get significant rain unless the porch has another structure providing cover above it.
Hardware and Fasteners
This is one area where cutting corners always costs more in the long run. In Mobile's humid, coastal-influenced environment, standard zinc-plated fasteners rust within a few years. For all screened porch work, we use stainless steel or hot-dipped galvanized hardware throughout. The cost difference is minor compared to the labor cost of replacing corroded hardware after a few years.
Screen door hinges and closers also see significant wear. We use heavy-duty commercial-grade hardware rather than the light spring hinges sold at big box stores. A screen door that doesn't close properly is the most common complaint we hear about porches built by others.
Flooring Under the Screen Porch
If you're adding a screened porch on a new slab, the concrete should be poured with a slight slope toward the open screen wall edge for drainage. Mobile gets intense rain events, and water that sits on a flat porch slab promotes mold and mildew and can damage wood framing at the base.
Composite decking is a common porch floor choice for porches built over wood framing. It handles moisture well and doesn't require sealing. Standard pressure-treated decking works fine as a secondary option at lower cost.
What We Specify for Mobile Projects
Based on our experience building and repairing porches across Mobile County and Baldwin County, here's what we default to on most projects:
- Framing: Pressure-treated pine (.15 retention, ground contact where applicable) or aluminum for pool work
- Screen: 20x20 no-see-um fiberglass mesh
- Fasteners: Stainless steel throughout
- Screen door hardware: Commercial-grade closers and hinges
- Roofing: Match existing house where attached; corrugated metal or polycarbonate panel for freestanding structures
- Slab slope: Minimum 1/8 inch per foot toward drainage edge
